Our story begins in Constantia, Cape Town — a fabled wine region where heritage and terroir meet with quiet distinction within the historic Le Marais estate.

ABOUT

————

St Leger produces three distinct wines: our signature Natural Sweet, Chardonnay and a soon to be released Pinot Noir.

The St Leger Natural Sweet is crafted from Muscat de Frontignan grapes, harvested from a single clos vineyard in Constantia that was once part of the historic Goedgeloof estate, dating back to 1707.

Our Chardonnay grapes come from Elgin’s cool climate and granite soils, while Pinot Noir is sourced from an exceptional clay-rich, ocean influenced vineyard in the Hemel en Aarde Valley.

Each wine expresses the character of its specific terroir while show casing the careful craftmanship that defines St Leger wines.

HISTORY

—————

For over three centuries, Constantia’s wines have adorned the tables of royalty and discerning connoisseurs alike. The storied legacy dates back to 1685, when Dutch colonial governor Simon van der Stel, captivated by the region’s fertile soils and idyllic climate, founded the Cape’s first vineyard.

Constantia’s vineyards soon became legendary, enchanting figures like Napoleon Bonaparte and King Louis-Philippe of France, while inspiring literary icons such as Charles Baudelaire and Jane Austen

In the late 19th century, Constantia’s vineyards were ravaged by powdery mildew and phylloxera and fell into decades of silence. The region’s winemaking spirit was re-established in the mid-20th century, with a passionate revival of its legendary wines.

Today, St Leger honours this heritage through meticulous, site-specific viticulture - combining time-tested techniques with modern precision to produce wines of terroir-driven distinction.

TERROIR

————

Constantia enjoys a unique microclimate shaped by its proximity to both the Atlantic and Indian Oceans. Its cool maritime influence, wet winters and warm, dry summers allow grapes to ripen slowly and evenly.

Our clos vineyard’s soils at Le Marais —a mix of decomposed granite, sandstone, and clay—add complexity, minerality and depth to the wines.

Winter rains build up water reserves in the soil, ensuring the vines have adequate moisture during the dry summer growing season.

Our vines are nurtured with patience to fully express the climate and soil for which the Constantia Valley is renowned. Cover crops are grown between the vines to enhance grape quality, improve the soils and create a more balanced vineyard ecosystem.

WINEMAKING

————

All our wines are meticulously crafted at our Constantia winery, where an unwavering commitment to excellence defines each step of the winemaking process.

Our philosophy is simple: no compromises, nothing done in haste – only an absolute dedication to exceptional quality.
